There’s a view of the glamorous life of public relations. You graduate college and move to NYC and immediately you’re one of the girls from Sex and the City. High heels and pavement, bright lights and celebrities.
It’s not exactly like that. It may not be anything like that.
Just like any other profession, public relations has a stereotype. But for many of us there won’t be any bright lights, big city. Instead, it may be more of a struggle to prove our worth, much less a huge starting paycheck. It may be a choice between agency and corporate. It may be a choice between living in a one bedroom with three girls so that you can get that NYC internship, or a spacey apartment in a smaller city with a different dream.
Our recent grads will tell you that the real world of public relations is very different, and they had the dream internship at the same firm they work now.
Truly, I don’t have any kind of perspective on the topic. I only know what I’ve heard. But, luckily, we have an expert coming in to help us deal with these issues.
Lisa Brock, who has recently written a book on this topic, will be joining us Wednesday, October 1, to speak on the transition, its benefits and downfalls.
We hope you’ll join us for this event! Whether you are a freshman or senior, you’ll find our workshop interesting and useful to your life. And, maybe… just maybe you’ll find a little clarity about your future path.

She was a strong speaker. I wish we had more time for questions. I wanted to ask her, what central defining aspect separates the "good" from the "great."

I haven't interned in the Big Apple. But, this summer I hope to! I'll be one of those girls stuffed into a tiny apartment who spends all her extra time at work trying to make a good impression (and avoid going home to a one-bedroom with four girls).
The picture from my blog was taken during last year's National Conference. Some of us took advantage of an unstructured evening and morning and skipped a session. We hopped a Chinatown bus from Philly to NYC for a night and morning. That was just one of the amazing reasons that conference sucked me into PRSSA -- adventure and new experiences.
Can't wait to have an internship there to add to the craziness.
